General Zoo Information

The Washington Park Zoo was founded in 1928, encompasses 15 acres on a hilly sand dune close to the lake, and is home to more than 200 animals. It is owned and operated by the City of Michigan City, Indiana.

NOTE: When the temperature falls below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, some animals, such as primates are brought inside. All animals at the Zoo have access to shelter where air conditioning and heating are provided during extreme weather.
